  READY TO LOVE

He’s her protector, her most trusted friend.

But can he protect her from himself?

John Kingston is one of the most notorious playboys on campus. He’s got it going on and he knows it.

Rugged good looks. Family money. Frontman of up and coming hard-rock band, Worst Exit. He can have any woman he desires.

Except one. The one woman who’s always off limits.

Haunted by an abusive past, Nicola Lewis can’t bear to be touched. She’s tough and self-reliant after learning the hard way not to depend on others. The only person she trusts is John, her best friend, band mate and confidant.

But when a moment of weakness changes things, it unleashes the burgeoning desire they’ve both held at
bay for so long.

Will it be a case of love conquers all, or a huge mistake that’ll destroy everything?

  Chapter 1

  ~John~

“What you’re tryin’ to make me/ Is a man bound by a steel cage/ You are the fucking worst of me/ Making the beast inside me rage.”

“Twist me.” Nicki’s voice wraps around mine as we belt out the chorus of one of our signature hard-rock fuck-you songs.

I wink at her, before doing a 180-degree spin to our drummer, Chloe, pumping my fist in the air, right on time as she slams down the final beat.

Applause and wolf-whistles thunder through the massive backyard of the campus frat house. As I look out at the crowd of college students, I catch a couple of blondes giving me the eye and licking their lips as their gazes rake over my chest and leather pants. I flash them one of my infamous panty-dropping grins. I catch Nicki’s eye and she’s shaking her head at me in playful disapproval. I shrug my shoulders and give her my most innocent look. It’s one she knows all too well and one I know she can see right through. She’s been my best friend for four years now, so I don’t expect anything less.

I feel an arm wrap around my shoulders and I turn to see our bassist and my roommate, Mitch Hawthorne, smirking at me. He brushes his sweat-drenched, brown hair out of his face and follows my line of sight. He winks at one of the girls and then grabs his cock through his jeans in an X-rated move. It’s his normal way of doing things. The guy has no inner censor.

“I’ll take the one in the booty shorts,” he tells me. “You take the leather skirt.”

I laugh. “What makes you think I’m not gonna take both of them?”

I see Nicki roll her eyes at me. She turns away and walks over to Chloe who’s spinning her drumsticks like a professional baton twirler as she makes her way across the stage.

As I turn back to the girls, something smacks me in the face. I grab at it. It’s my white shirt. I’d lost it somehow during the set. I can’t remember which song had me ripping it off. But, as usual, it ended up on the floor. I look at Nicki to see her laughing at me, she being the culprit who’d thrown it at me.

“Don’t like what you see?” I tease her.

  She blushes and looks away.

I smile to myself. She’s always the same. So shy about stuff like that.

As I’m shrugging my shirt back on, Blake Turner bounds onto the deck that’s doubling as a stage. He’s the head of the frat house and the guy who booked us tonight. He’s also my law buddy. Urgh. Fucking law program. All thanks to my asshole of a father.

“Give it up for Worst Exit everyone!” Blake roars to the crowd.

Applause, wolf-whistles and female screams erupt once again. Blake grabs my shoulder and pulls me in close enough to hear, as he says, “Awesome set. Thanks, man. Stick around, all right? Enjoy the rest of the night.”

I force myself to nod, even though my plan had been to get the hell out of Dodge, as soon as we were done playing. I didn’t want to even play here in the first place, because I hate frat guys, as a rule. Blake is the one and only exception. But I couldn’t justify turning down a gig to the band. Not to mention, Blake had basically begged me.

I’ll just have to keep my head down for once. The frat guys aren’t my biggest fans either. Something about me getting too much pussy and encroaching on their territory, apparently. They think they have dibs on every unattached woman on campus, that they should be granted first right of refusal. Fucking ridiculous. It’s not like I poach their women on purpose. It’s the whole rocker front man thing. They come to me. Especially, after they’ve seen me play. So, if I like what I see, I fucking well take it. There’s not a damned thing wrong with that, as far as I’m concerned.

Not wanting to rile myself up, I swallow those antagonistic thoughts down, and head off stage, the band following.

I catch Chloe shaking her head, her wild blonde hair whipping about. “Unbelievable!” she mutters, reaching into the bust of her mini-dress and withdrawing a twenty dollar bill. She hands it to Nicki, who grins at her victoriously.

A bet, huh? “What did you bet on?” I ask, more than a little curious.

“When you’d take your shirt off this time.” Her shoulders slump. “Once again, Nicki called it.”

My gaze snaps to Nicki. “Is that right?”

She turns slightly to tuck the bill into the back pocket of her tight-as-sin jeans. My gaze drops to that sweet ass of hers, lingering a little too long, before she turns back, facing me head on. Quickly, my eyes snap back to her face. Jesus. Get a grip. Off limits. Always off limits.

  “Yep,” she says, happily.

I laugh, enjoying the flash of that amazing smile of hers.

“It’s not fair. She knows you too well,” Chloe complains as she fiddles with the zippers on her boots, pulling them further up her thighs.

“I warned you not to bet with her when it comes to John,” Mitch says, laughing at her as he fixes his shaggy, mussed-up hair, after a crazy amount of headbanging during our performance.

Our revelry is cut short when a certain someone strides up to the girls. My fists clench automatically as I take in the slimy piece of shit. Axel Craven. He’s the worst of the frat guys on campus. I hate the fucker with a vengeance. My anger builds as I realize he’s not here for who I’d assumed. He’s Chloe’s type, for sure. Arrogant, pushy, and sleazy. I’m not judging her, it’s just the fact of the matter. She knows exactly what she’s doing, though. She picks assholes so she doesn’t risk getting attached. The girl likes to run free, just like me.

But Axel doesn’t have his eyes on her. Nah, they’re all over Nicki, eye-fucking her real blatantly, right in front of all of us.

I watch him fold his arms across his tank top, an obvious move to flex his biceps at her. Fucking amateur. “You were great up there, babe.” He holds his hand out to her. “Axel Craven.”

She hesitates, her body tensing at the prospect of shaking his offered hand. But then Chloe eases her forward, forcing their hands to connect. “Nicola Lewis,” Chloe tells him, smiling as she watches the two of them shake hands.

“Yeah? That’s one hell of a pretty name,” Axel says.

Nicki pulls away and tells him shyly, barely able to make eye contact, “I go by Nicki.”

“Let me buy you a drink, pretty Nicki.”

  Urgh. Gag.

She shakes her head. “I was actually going to take off.”

Chloe interferes again, making my blood boil. “It’s just one drink, hun. Live a little.”

Fuck. Why is she always pressuring Nicki to hook up? She won’t. She doesn’t involve herself with anyone. She never allows a man to touch her. I’m the only exception to that rule, the only one who can hug her without her tensing up. The only guy she trusts.

I watch her wrap her arms around herself, her normal defensive reaction rising to the surface. Anxiety flashes in her deep blue eyes as she looks up at Axel. She doesn’t want to do it, but all this pressure from Chloe has her unsure now, caught between a rock and a hard place. Chloe should keep the hell out of it, because she doesn’t get it. She doesn’t know what happened to Nicki to make her this way.

  That’s it!

I’m about to end this shit-show, stepping forward to intimidate the slimy frat ass to back off, when Mitch snags my arm, holding me back. It’s not enough to stop me and he knows it all too well. So, he follows it up with a resolute shake of his head and that familiar flash of his eyes that he reserves just for me when he thinks I’m on the verge of overreacting and allowing my temper to fuck all over something.

  “Not your business,” he hisses.

  I growl inwardly.

But, he’s right. He usually is, the smug know-it-all.

I’m grinding my teeth so hard as I watch the distasteful scene play out, that it actually has me worried I might be doing some permanent damage.

“She’s right, babe. It’s just a drink. Come on, yeah?” Axel presses with Chloe smiling at him, silently egging
him on.

It doesn’t escape my notice just how careful he is not to touch her. He’s clearly gotten the message from her standoffish, tense body language. But, it’s all fake. I know it. The way he’s treating her with kid gloves, that reassuring smile he’s flashing her way. I know the guy and that’s not him. He’s not about soft and slow. He’s a fucking animal. He’s just pulling whatever he can out of his ass to butter her up, so he can enact his ulterior motive of getting into her pants.

“Well?” Axel presses, when Nicki doesn’t respond.

She’s not responding, because she’s thinking. Of course, he wouldn’t know that. He has no clue about who she is. He won’t want to either. She’s just another potential notch on his bedpost. That little crinkle across the bridge of her nose is the telltale sign of her being deep in thought.

That has me worried. What is there to think about? Can’t she tell what a slimy prick he is? Why isn’t she turning him away? Why does Chloe’s matchmaking bull seem to be working this time? She’s done this countless times and Nicki has never gone through with her urgings to flirt around with some guy.

Chloe nudges her hard and whispers something to her.

“Sure. Okay,” Nicki gives in. “A drink.”

And just like that she’s following Axel over to the bar inside the frat house.

Chloe smiles, obviously pleased with herself, and then heads over to the barbeque in the corner of the backyard.

Mitch and I follow Nicki and Axel’s path into the house. I feel him pull me back before I can make it to the bar. He points to the two blondes from earlier. They’re gesturing to us from one of the leather couches. One of them flashes me a come-fuck-me grin. I take one last glance at Nicki before Mitch pulls me towards the girls.

  Fine.

  Chapter 2

  ~John~

I’m on my fourth glass of scotch as one of the blondes sits on my lap, her hands all over me, her ass grinding into my semi-hard cock as she chatters away with her friend and Mitch across from us on another couch. They’re hanging onto every word of one of Mitch’s exaggerated stories about some gig we played a year ago. The guy has a talent for storytelling. He’s got the gift of the gab and he’s always the life of the party. Usually I’m right there with him.
